Active Share

Terms

A measure of how much a portfolio deviates from its benchmark.

Description

Active share quantifies the percentage of a portfolio’s holdings that differ from its benchmark, used by family offices to assess a manager’s conviction in active strategies. High active share indicates bold stock picks, potentially driving alpha, but also increases risk of underperformance. It helps evaluate whether fees for active management are justified. Transparency in reporting active share fosters client trust.
